Hair Loss
Approximately 5 million hair follicles cover the body, with around 100,000 – 150,000 of these on the scalp. As part of the natural hair growth process, a person will experience a loss of between 50 and 100 head hairs per day – often seen when brushing or washing the hair. For most people this loss goes unnoticed, and only when hair starts to come out in excess of the norm, does it start to take an aesthetic and / or emotional effect.
There are a number of types of hair loss that many men and women commonly experience, worldwide. Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) is a common form of pattern baldness that’s often perceived as affecting adult males – and most frequently does. However, this genetic condition can also affect women, and the age at which it’s experienced can vary with each individual. For men, AGA often develops on the top of the head or recedes from around the hairline. When it affects women, it’s usually a thinning of the front 2 thirds of the head or a wider parting that starts to emerge. Changes in levels of androgen hormones is a key factor in the onset of pattern baldness, especially during ageing, pregnancy and menopause.
Other factors to consider with hair loss include: stress, scarring, iron deficiency, weight loss or an underlying medical condition (such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome).
Other forms of Alopecia can affect anyone at any age: Alopecia Areata appears as small round patches on the head; Alopecia Totalis involves hair loss all over the head and, Alopecia Universalis sees or a complete loss of hair on the head and body. The cause of Alopecia may require further investigation, which could involve a blood test. In many cases the hair will grow back on its own, but this doesn’t rule out a long-term concern whereby hair loss will recur.
AHI Clinic will assess all forms of hair loss, and will carry out a full and thorough examination before any recommendation is made. Pattern baldness is often treated at the clinic using a hair transplant procedure known as FUE (Follicular Unit Excision) or we may prescribe an FDA approved hair restoration medication such as: minoxidil (topical solution) or Finasteride (oral medication), to restore hair growth that is fuller, thicker and healthier.

frequently asked questions
The beard transplant can be used for men who are concerned with the way their facial hair grows. Genetics can influence the natural growth pattern, with factors such as ageing and scarring contributing to areas of hair loss. This procedure can be helpful to those who wish to achieve a fuller, thicker beard that has well-defined hairline contours.
FUE (Follicular Unit Excision) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) are safe and effective methods of hair restoration. AHI uses advanced surgical techniques and modern devices to ensure the procedure works in the best interests of the patient’s well-being.
Most patients will agree that this procedure can be a little uncomfortable. AHI Clinic ensures their patient’s will stay comfortable throughout the procedure, using a local anaesthetic to numb the treatment area.
Swelling, redness and bruising, both at the implant site and at the donor site are to be expected following the procedure. Within 3 – 5 days you can expect these effects to ease, and you should not be alarmed if you notice that some hairs have naturally expelled.
It may take up to 6 months for the growth of facial hair to become noticeably thick and full. Within 12 – 18 months the new hair growth will be fully mature and the final results of the transplant are evident. Once fully established your facial hair should be fuller looking and more healthy.
